In those days the\nword of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>2<\/b><\/font>\n One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see,\nwas lying down in his usual place. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>3<\/b><\/font> The lamp of God had not yet gone out,and Samuel was lying down in the house of the LORD, where the ark of God\nwas. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>4<\/b><\/font> Then the LORD called Samuel.\nSamuel answered, \u2018Here I am.\u2019 \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>5<\/b><\/font> And he ran to Eli and said, \u2018Here I am; you\ncalled me.\u2019\nBut Eli said, \u2018I did not call; go back and lie down.\u2019 So he went and lay down.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>6<\/b><\/font>\n Again the LORD called, \u2018Samuel!\u2019 And Samuel got up and went to Eli and\nsaid, \u2018Here I am; you called me.\u2019\n\u2018My son,\u2019 Eli said, \u2018I did not call; go back and lie down.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>7<\/b><\/font>\n Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: the word of the LORD had not yet\nbeen revealed to him.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>8<\/b><\/font>\n A third time the LORD called, \u2018Samuel!\u2019 And Samuel got up and went to Eli\nand said, \u2018Here I am; you called me.\u2019\nThen Eli realised that the LORD was calling the boy. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>9<\/b><\/font> So Eli told Samuel, \u2018Go\nand lie down, and if he calls you, say, \u201cSpeak, LORD, for your servant is\nlistening.\u201d\u2019 So Samuel went and lay down in his place.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>10<\/b><\/font>\n The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, \u2018Samuel!\nSamuel!\u2019\nThen Samuel said, \u2018Speak, for your servant is listening.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>11<\/b><\/font>\n And the LORD said to Samuel: \u2018See, I am about to do something in Israel that\nwill make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>12<\/b><\/font> At that time I will\ncarry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family \u2013 from beginning to\nend. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>13<\/b><\/font> For I told him that I would judge his family for ever because of the sin\nhe knew about; his sons uttered blasphemies against God, and he failed to\nrestrain them. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>14<\/b><\/font> Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, \u201cThe guilt of Eli\u2019s house\nwill never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.\u201d\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>15<\/b><\/font>\n Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of\nthe LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>16<\/b><\/font> but Eli called him and said,\n\u2018Samuel, my son.\u2019\nSamuel answered, \u2018Here I am.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>17<\/b><\/font>\n \u2018What was it he said to you?\u2019 Eli asked. \u2018Do not hide it from me. May God\ndeal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told\nyou.\u2019 \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>18<\/b><\/font> So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said,\n\u2018He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>19<\/b><\/font>\n The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel\u2019s\nwords fall to the ground. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>20<\/b><\/font> And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognised\nthat Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>21<\/b><\/font> The LORD continued to\nappear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.\n<br><br>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sermon from St Andrews Church, Slip End, UK.
