But I took your father Abraham and led him throughout Canaan\nand gave him many descendants. \n<br><br>\nI gave him Isaac, and to Isaac I gave Jacob\nand Esau. Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.\n<br><br>\n\u2018\u201cThen I sent Moses and Aaron and I brought you out. When I brought your\npeople out of Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued them\nwith chariots and horsemen as far as the Red Sea. \n<br><br>\nThey cried LORD for help,\nand I brought the sea over the Egyptians. You saw with your own eyes what I\ndid to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.\n<br><br>\n\u2018\u201cThen you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The citizens of Jericho\nfought against you, as did also a lot of other \u201cites\u201d, but I gave them into your\nhands. \n<br><br>\nYou did not do it with your own sword and bow. I gave you a land on\nwhich you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat\nfrom vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.\u201d\n<br><br>\n\u2018Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods\nyour ancestors worshipped beyond the River Euphrates and in Egypt, and\nserve the LORD.\n<br><br>\nAs for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.\u2019\nThen the people answered, \u2018We too will serve the LORD, because he is our\nGod.\u2019\n<br><br>\nJoshua said to the people, \u2018If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, he\nwill turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been\ngood to you.\u2019\n<br><br>\nBut the people said to Joshua, \u2018No! We will serve the LORD.\u2019\n<br><br>\nOn that day Joshua made a covenant for the people. Then he took a large\nstone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the LORD.\n<br><br>\n\u2018See!\u2019 he said to all the people. \u2018This stone will be a witness against us. It\nhas heard all the words the LORD has said to us. It will be a witness against\nyou if you are untrue to your God.\u2019\n<br><br><br>\n\n\n<font color=\"red\">John 6: 56-69<\/font>\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>56<\/b><\/font> Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in\nthem. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>57<\/b><\/font> Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so\nthe one who feeds on me will live because of me. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>58<\/b><\/font> This is the bread that\ncame down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever\nfeeds on this bread will live for ever.\u2019 \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>59<\/b><\/font> He said this while teaching in the\nsynagogue in Capernaum.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>60<\/b><\/font> On hearing it, many of his disciples said, \u2018This is a hard teaching. Who can\naccept it?\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>61<\/b><\/font> Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to\nthem, \u2018Does this offend you? \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>62<\/b><\/font> Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to\nwhere he was before! \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>63<\/b><\/font> The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The\nwords I have spoken to you \u2013 they are full of the Spirit and life. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>64<\/b><\/font> Yet there\nare some of you who do not believe.\u2019 For Jesus had known from the beginning\nwhich of them did not believe and who would betray him. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>65<\/b><\/font> He went on to\nsay, \u2018This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has\nenabled them.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>66<\/b><\/font> From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>67<\/b><\/font> \u2018You do not want to leave too, do you?\u2019 Jesus asked the Twelve.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>68<\/b><\/font> Simon Peter answered him, \u2018Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the\nwords of eternal life. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>69<\/b><\/font> We have come to believe and to know that you are the\nHoly One of God.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>70<\/b><\/font> Then Jesus replied, \u2018Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a\ndevil!\u2019 \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>71<\/b><\/font> (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the\nTwelve, was later to betray him.)\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sermon from St Andrews Church, Slip End, UK.
