They told\nEzra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which\nthe Lord had commanded for Israel.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>2<\/b><\/font>  So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the\nassembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to\nunderstand. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>3<\/b><\/font>  He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before\nthe Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could\nunderstand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>5<\/b><\/font>  Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was\nstanding above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>6 <\/b><\/font> Ezra praised\nthe Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, \u201cAmen!\nAmen!\u201d Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the\nground.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>8<\/b><\/font>  They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the\nmeaning so that the people understood what was being read.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>9<\/b><\/font>  Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the\nLevites who were instructing the people said to them all, \u201cThis day is holy to\nthe Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.\u201d For all the people had been weeping as\nthey listened to the words of the Law.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>10<\/b><\/font>  Nehemiah said, \u201cGo and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to\nthose who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the\njoy of the Lord is your strength.\u201d\n\n<br><br><br>\n\n<font color=\"red\">Luke 4 v 14-21<\/font>\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>14<\/b><\/font>  Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report\nabout him spread through all the surrounding country. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>15<\/b><\/font>  He began to teach in their\nsynagogues and was praised by everyone.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>16<\/b><\/font>  When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the\nsynagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>17<\/b><\/font>  and the\nscroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the\nplace where it was written:\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>18<\/b><\/font>  \u201cThe Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good\nnews to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery\nof sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>19<\/b><\/font>  to proclaim the year of the Lord\u2019s\nfavour.\u201d\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>20<\/b><\/font>  And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes\nof all in the synagogue were fixed on him. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>21<\/b><\/font>  Then he began to say to them, \u201cToday\nthis scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.\u201d\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sermon from St Andrews Church, Slip End, UK.
