It was about noon.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>7<\/b><\/font> When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, \u2018Will you\ngive me a drink?\u2019 \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>8<\/b><\/font> (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>9<\/b><\/font> The Samaritan woman said to him, \u2018You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan\nwoman. How can you ask me for a drink?\u2019 (For Jews do not associate with\nSamaritans.)\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>10<\/b><\/font> Jesus answered her, \u2018If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you\nfor a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living\nwater.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>11<\/b><\/font> \u2018Sir,\u2019 the woman said, \u2018you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep.\nWhere can you get this living water? \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>12<\/b><\/font> Are you greater than our father Jacob,\nwho gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his\nlivestock?\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>13<\/b><\/font> Jesus answered, \u2018Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>14<\/b><\/font> but\nwhoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give\nthem will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>15<\/b><\/font> The woman said to him, \u2018Sir, give me this water so that I won\u2019t get thirsty and\nhave to keep coming here to draw water.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>16<\/b><\/font> He told her, \u2018Go, call your husband and come back.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>17<\/b><\/font> \u2018I have no husband,\u2019 she replied.\nJesus said to her, \u2018You are right when you say you have no husband. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>18<\/b><\/font> The\nfact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your\nhusband. What you have just said is quite true.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>19<\/b><\/font> \u2018Sir,\u2019 the woman said, \u2018I can see that you are a prophet. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>20<\/b><\/font> Our ancestors\nworshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we\nmust worship is in Jerusalem.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>21<\/b><\/font> \u2018Woman,\u2019 Jesus replied, \u2018believe me, a time is coming when you will worship\nthe Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>22<\/b><\/font> You Samaritans\nworship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is\nfrom the Jews. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>23<\/b><\/font> Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true\nworshippers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the\nkind of worshippers the Father seeks. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>24<\/b><\/font> God is spirit, and his worshippers\nmust worship in the Spirit and in truth.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>25<\/b><\/font> The woman said, \u2018I know that Messiah\u2019 (called Christ) \u2018is coming. When he\ncomes, he will explain everything to us.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>26<\/b><\/font> Then Jesus declared, \u2018I, the one speaking to you \u2013 I am he.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>27<\/b><\/font> Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a\nwoman. But no one asked, \u2018What do you want?\u2019 or \u2018Why are you talking with\nher?\u2019\n<br><br><br>\n\n<font color=\"red\">John 4 v 28-30; 39-42 <\/font>\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>28<\/b><\/font> Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to\nthe people, \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>29<\/b><\/font> \u2018Come, see a man who told me everything I\u2019ve ever done. Could\nthis be the Messiah?\u2019 \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>30<\/b><\/font> They came out of the town and made their way\ntowards him.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>39<\/b><\/font> Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the\nwoman\u2019s testimony, \u2018He told me everything I\u2019ve ever done.\u2019 \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>40<\/b><\/font> So when the\nSamaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two\ndays. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>41<\/b><\/font> And because of his words many more became believers.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>42<\/b><\/font> They said to the woman, \u2018We no longer believe just because of what you\nsaid; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the\nSaviour of the world.\u2019<br><br>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sermon from St Andrews Church, Slip End, UK.
