PEPPERSTOCK ARCHERS BACK IN SLIP END
After several years absence Pepperstock Archers have moved back to the Slip End Playing Field as their permanent venue.

Did you used to shoot and have equipment in the attic? Why not give it a dust down and come to see us. The regular Club night during the summer months is a Wednesday evening and anyone coming to see us will be sure of a warm welcome.
We also cater for people wishing to try it out and are currently running a Beginners Course. If enough interest is shown then another one may be arranged later in the year. These courses run for 6 weeks, full tuition is given by an experienced coach and we have equipment for you to use.
Archery is a good sport for all ages from 8 upwards and also has the advantage of being suitable for all members of a family. It can be undertaken at different levels. Some members just like to come to the field to loose a few arrows and maybe take part in Club competitions whereas others enjoy visiting different Clubs to take part in their Open competitions. You can also shoot all year long as during the winter months we hold our Club evening in the Gym at Challney Community College. The more hardy members will also be using the field despite the cold weather.
Now the Club has returned home we are very keen to grow in size and therefore we would welcome new members.
If this note has kindled an interest to take up this sport please come to the field on a Wednesday evening or contact Ann, our Secretary, by phone on 01582 724160 or e-mail: ann.murphy@ntlworld.com

CONGRATULATIONS – GILLIAN & MICHAEL ON YOUR RUBY WEDDING.
How many people can say they married their childhood sweetheart? Well, Gillian and Michael Plummer can, and on 3rd August they celebrate their Ruby Wedding anniversary. Both were born in Slip End, and Gillian moved to Pepperstock when she was five. They both attended Slip End School, Gillian going on to Rotherham High.
From a very early age they attended Pepperstock Baptist Chapel, Gillian playing the piano and organ. Later Michael became secretary after his father died, and they continued to attend this chapel until it closed They started going out together when they were 15 and at 21 decided to get married! The wedding was at St Andrew’s, conducted by Rev Kenneth Ashworth. Gillian’s uncle drove her to the church in her dad’s car and, as it was a Bank holiday, friends and family did the catering.
After a honeymoon in Weston Super Mare they set up home in Markyate Road, caring for Gillian’s Grandad. Michael started work at the Co-op as an upholsterer, and then became a carpenter, later moving to Johnson & Fullers. After a spell at Dunstable Rubber he returned to carpentry at AA Joinery in Slip End and he still works for Travis Perkins in Luton who took over the firm.

The Happy Couple outside St Andrew’s Church
Gillian worked at the Scotch Wool shop in Wellington St and was relief manageress at the Bedford and Letchworth branches until the shop closed. She also worked part time for a while at AA Joinery and Travis Perkins.
In January 1967 they had a daughter, Paula, then in November 1969 a son, Neil, who sadly died. Then, in April 1974, another son Christopher. Paula and Christopher are now both married and live locally, each having two children – Courtney & Sean, Zoe and Amy. Gillian & Michael love having their grandchildren to visit.
In 1972, Gillian was asked to help the Guides, and this led to her taking on the Brownies with which she continues to this day, also helping at the school two afternoons a week.
Michael has played bowls for Luton West End for nearly 40 years, and is their President. Both are involved with the Garden Association, Slip End & District Association and the Village Hall, and in fund raising for various charities.

MURIEL HAS HER SAY!
I will try to write with interest for the August month even though I have not seen a lot going on apart from the youngsters still bored out of their wits with no interest in what they do. (see editors page! - editor)
I spoke to one young lady in the playing field one evening when she was trying to ride her bike up the toddlers slide and told her that she should have more consideration for the toddlers that use the playing field. However no names mentioned but she was so sorry and felt that the village offered nothing for her age group and I agreed with her
Years ago we had a youth centre at the Hall and I do believe the youngsters did use the Terrapin Building to allow activities purposely for the youth of Slip End.
I wonder what Peter Edwards would have thought of the youth if he was still here today when he founded the Terrapin Hall purely for the Slip End Youngsters. Who is in charge of that place? As I have lost track!
I do wish that I had myself taken more interest in the Peter Edwards campaign but I was busy bringing up my own family and now I am too old to wear myself out with perhaps an effortless programme for these village lads and lassies. I suppose being young myself a long time ago and having so much to do in the olden days it makes me feel sorry that all youngsters today want to do is watch television, shouting about, thinking they are in charge and no end product.
Well that’s how I feel about the youth of today but there may be hope for them yet and lets ask them what they want so they can feel happier about themselves. Please do not think that I am running down all of you young people as that is not the case, and I wish that I could wave a magic wand and all your wishes would be granted but as I cant your presence in the village will perhaps never change unless you all come up with ideas as to what could happen to keep you all entertained, but I have asked over the months and no one has made a suggestion. Well this is the last time I will ask you to come forward with your suggestions and if you are afraid to tell me well write it down and choose a leader to give me your ideas and I will push it to the public or media to sort things out for you all, but as the summer will soon be gone, lets get you all doing something constructive, but I feel that I am wasting my time again. Now to get away from you youngsters let me think about other news that may be of interest.
The village hall meeting was the same as usual with a few disputes this month making it more interesting but all leaving best of friends and that what I call a good meeting.
I don’t know if any of the public look up the parish council minutes each month, if not and in case you are interested, I note that the clerk of the council, whoever that may be is going to write to Caddington parish council and the police drawing attention to congestion caused by traffic by the frequent car boot sales on Mr Ratleys land in Manor Rd, Caddington.
How sad if it is stopped - not because I go, but the pleasure it surely brings to many people including slip-enders. I would have thought, and yes my own thoughts are that Slip End and Caddington should decide on what each parish does accordingly.
I also note that there are supposed to be parking problems in Slip End when there are car boot sales that a certain lady does purely for charity. How sad a place this is getting, but I know the police are kind to this lady’s boot sales and put out cones for her, so I’m sure they in authority will allow her to continue. Anyway all for now, don’t comment please as at my age it’s never a worry to me and its nice to know what life is still like in our village

WITH DEEPEST SYMPATHY
It is, with great sadness that I have to include the following item, as Lyn was known to many of you. She had suffered greatly in recent years particularly after the death of her husband Gerry. We can only pray that they are united in death and no longer suffering.
Lyn Stanbrook
Very sadly, Lyn Stanbrook of Front Street, Slip End, passed away on the 27th June after a brave and courageous fight against cancer.
Her family would like to thank her many friends for their kindness and support shown to her during her illness. They would also like to thank everyone who very kindly donated money to the memory of Lyn. All donations have been sent to the New Cancer Unit at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital of which Lyn was also a fundraiser.
Lastly thank you all for the cards and kind words; it was much appreciated by her family.
Mary & Roy Perry
Sheldon & Russel Stanbrook and families.
Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you planned:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do no grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Then that you should remember and be sad.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS

I came across an excellent little book recently giving a local guide to what’s on for your children during the school holidays. It is called The Little Issue – here are some of the details from the book. Well worth a look if you are already tearing your hair out!
It is available through the website at: www.thelittleissue.co.uk   and will provide you with a wealth of local information available to your children in this area. Otherwise pick one up at Dunstable Downs information shop.
Days out; Sports; Activities; What’s On; Music; Advice; Places to visit, and much, much more. And its free!!

EDITORS COLUMN
Now, I wasn’t supposed to be doing this issue as I am on ‘convalescence leave’ but when my dutiful sub-editor declared he was needed in Dubai urgently for work and could I possibly complete it – he had done a few pages! “There shouldn’t be much more to add and it will only be a limited edition” he said! As it is, it has turned out to be quite a newsy August issue so I hope you enjoy reading it. Thanks especially to Brian Church for helping with the typing.
Hope you all have a healthy, happy and sunny time at home or away this summer.
Swarm of Bees
B happy, B bright, B kind, B polite,
B courteous, B keen, B patient, B clean;
B cautious, B good, Be temperate, B mild,
B careful, B wise, B sweet as a child;
B thoughtful, B loving, B prudent, B true,
B brave, B earnest, wrong thoughts to subdue,
B honest, B faithful, B considerate -
and that, my friends, is the way to B great.
Reading through the pages, we all have a lot to be thankful for – for the glorious gardens in Slip End, for the love of friends and family through good times and bad, and for the world we live in. Make sure you appreciate it.
Thank you

Thankyou’s such a little word.
Often thought but seldom heard.
It doesn’t take that long to say
Yet on our lips it fades away.
A gentle word, a casual hand,
A caring thought to understand.
A droplet in this cold world’s pond
That sends its ripples far beyond.
For who’s to know the joy it brings,
The comfort from another’s wings.
Unless the word that lies so small
Becomes the greatest of them all.
Unless we learn to take and give
Appreciating who we’re with:
It doesn’t take too long to say
But thankyou goes a long, long way!
