Isaiah 53 v 4-12
4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished
by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us
has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He
was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a
lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not
open his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his
generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the
transgression of my people he was punished.
9 He was assigned a grave with the
wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any
deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though
the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his
days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
11 After he has suffered, he will
see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will
justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion
among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured
out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the
sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Hebrews 5 v 1-10
1 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent
the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
2 He is able
to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is
subject to weakness.
3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well
as for the sins of the people.
4 And no one takes this honour on himself, but he
receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.
5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high
priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”
6 And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of
Melchizedek.”
7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with
fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was
heard because of his reverent submission.
8 Son though he was, he learned
obedience from what he suffered
9 and, once made perfect, he became the source
of eternal salvation for all who obey him
10 and was designated by God to be high
priest in the order of Melchizedek.
