He stood up to read, \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>17<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>18<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;\u201cThe Spirit of the Lord is on me,\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;because he has anointed me\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;to proclaim good news to the poor.\nHe has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and recovery of sight for the blind,\nto set the oppressed free,\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>19<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;to proclaim the year of the Lord\u2019s favour.\u201d\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>20<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>21<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;He began by saying to them, \u201cToday this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.\u201d\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>22<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. \u201cIsn\u2019t this Joseph\u2019s son?\u201d they asked.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>23<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;Jesus said to them, \u201cSurely you will quote this proverb to me: \u2018Physician, heal yourself!\u2019 And you will tell me, \u2018Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.\u2019\u201d\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>24<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;\u201cTruly I tell you,\u201d he continued, \u201cno prophet is accepted in his hometown.\n<br><br><br>\n\n<font color=\"red\">Psalm 119 v 129 \u2013 136<\/font>\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>129<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>130<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;The unfolding of your words gives light;\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;it gives understanding to the simple.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>131<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>132<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;Turn to me and have mercy on me,\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;as you always do to those who love your name.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>133<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>134<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;Redeem me from human oppression, that I may obey your precepts.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>135<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;Make your face shine on your servant and teach me your decrees.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>136<\/b><\/font>&nbsp;Streams of tears flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed.<br><br>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sermon from St Andrews Church, Slip End, UK.
