As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don\u2019t know\nwhat has happened to him.\u201d\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>2<\/b><\/font> Aaron answered them, \u201cTake off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and\nyour daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.\u201d \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>3<\/b><\/font> So all the people took off their\nearrings and brought them to Aaron. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>4<\/b><\/font> He took what they handed him and made it\ninto an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said,\n\u201cThese are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.\u201d\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>5<\/b><\/font> When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced,\n\u201cTomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.\u201d \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>6<\/b><\/font> So the next day the people rose\nearly and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward\nthey sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>7<\/b><\/font> Then the Lord said to Moses, \u201cGo down, because your people, whom you brought\nup out of Egypt, have become corrupt. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>8<\/b><\/font> They have been quick to turn away from\nwhat I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a\ncalf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, \u2018These are your\ngods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>9<\/b><\/font> \u201cI have seen these people,\u201d the Lord said to Moses, \u201cand they are a stiffnecked\npeople. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>10<\/b><\/font> Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and\nthat I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.\u201d\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>11<\/b><\/font> But Moses sought the favour of the Lord his God. \u201cLord,\u201d he said, \u201cwhy should\nyour anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great\npower and a mighty hand? \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>12<\/b><\/font> Why should the Egyptians say, \u2018It was with evil intent\nthat he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face\nof the earth\u2019? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your\npeople. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>13<\/b><\/font> Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, to whom you swore\nby your own self: \u2018I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky\nand I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their\ninheritance forever.\u2019\u201d \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>14<\/b><\/font> Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the\ndisaster he had threatened.\n\n<br><br><br>\n\n<font color=\"red\">Matthew 22 v 1-14<\/font>\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>1<\/b><\/font> Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>2<\/b><\/font> \u201cThe kingdom of heaven is like a\nking who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>3<\/b><\/font> He sent his servants to those\nwho had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>4<\/b><\/font> \u201cThen he sent some more servants and said, \u2018Tell those who have been invited\nthat I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered,\nand everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>5<\/b><\/font> \u201cBut they paid no attention and went off\u2014one to his field, another to his\nbusiness. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>6<\/b><\/font> The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>7<\/b><\/font> The king\nwas enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their\ncity.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>8<\/b><\/font> \u201cThen he said to his servants, \u2018The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited\ndid not deserve to come. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>9<\/b><\/font> So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet\nanyone you find.\u2019 \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>10<\/b><\/font> So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the\npeople they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled\nwith guests.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>11<\/b><\/font> \u201cBut when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was\nnot wearing wedding clothes. \n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>12<\/b><\/font> He asked, \u2018How did you get in here without wedding\nclothes, friend?\u2019 The man was speechless.\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>13<\/b><\/font> \u201cThen the king told the attendants, \u2018Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside,\ninto the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.\u2019\n<br><br>\n<font color=\"blue\"><b>14<\/b><\/font> \u201cFor many are invited, but few are chosen.\u201d\n<br><br>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ToSermon from St Andrews Church, Slip End, UK.
